How to Boost Manufacturing of EV Battery

By Auto Tech Outlook | Monday, September 23, 2019

As uptake of electric vehicles (EVs) elevate, the demand of EV-battery also increases, now the manufacturers should pay attention to meet the upcoming needs of EV-battery.

FREMONT, CA: According to market research firm SNE Research, Global demand for electric vehicle (EV) batteries will far exceed supply starting in 2023. It is expected that EV battery manufacturers will be able to make a considerable profit four years later. A report from the Electric Vehicle Outlook 2017, Bloomberg New Energy Finance (July 2017) says, by 2040, electric vehicle sales are projected to represent more than half of all global, light-duty vehicles sales.

Here are some operations which need to be smart, highly automated, and accelerated to achieve the battery demand and grow the business to a level:

Booming market and evolution

Now the challenge has become more complicated because the demand for batteries is increasing to create electric vehicles. This time around, the manufacturers have to keep abreast with the rapid evolution of battery technology. To manage yield and quality, one has to be able to adjust to produce multiple battery types efficiently. Here automaton plays a critical role in boosting the manufacturing process.

Scale production over time

Now to scale up production, there is no need to tackle all the work with great efforts. Automated operations, if used correctly, can speed up the production over time. There are some systems which can build high-performance automated operations; one of them is the manufacturing execution system (MES). The MES applications address specific manufacturing challenges like quality, machine performance, and genealogy by fully integrating the process work instructions into the machines. To assure the quality of the battery, it will track and give a clear picture of the complete battery, and this transparency will deliver a consistent level of quality required for each battery. The system also performs quality check, and informs the user to respond before they run into quality issues. On the whole MES system will optimize the processes, improve output and quality.

Prepare for the long term

Develop a structured plan to build a long-term strategy, and evaluate all the operations through the lens of industry 4.0 (smart factory). To design an efficient control and information system, choose the right industry partner with great experience, who can lead you to achieve production goals. The right partner will examine the marketing trends and will support to lay the foundation to supporting the needs and vision.

Need for additional battery-manufacturing capacity

The electronic vehicle sector is experiencing an increase in demand for battery supply. As many European governments have announced to ban sales of internal combustion engine vehicles by 2030. That is why, its estimated that in the coming years, about 70 percent of the sold vehicles will be electric. It is necessary to speed-up the battery manufacturing process to meet up the future demands.

Many countries are urging to expand electric vehicles, to develop the environmental-friendly atmosphere. This expansion will increase the demand for EV batteries. Some countries, like The International Energy Agency (IEA), said that the size of the global EV market would jump to 280 million units in 2030. Countries like China, Europe, and the United States are planning to raise the proportion of EV sales in the coming years.
